H5P

Navigate: Content > H5P

H5P is used to create and manage reusable interactive learning content. An H5P item can be used as the main content in a training or as an H5P question in a quiz.

H5P content is built from content types. A content type is the activity template the author chooses, for example an interactive video, presentation, branching scenario, drag-and-drop task, or question set.

info

Use the H5P section to create, edit, preview, upload, copy, download, and delete reusable H5P content. Access depends on your H5P permissions.

What H5P is

H5P is an interactive content format for browser-based learning activities. Instead of uploading only a passive file, an author can build an activity that asks the learner to choose answers, move items, follow a scenario, explore media, or complete a short practice task.

In the LMS, each H5P activity is saved as an H5P record. The record keeps the activity name, permission labels, H5P editor data, uploaded .h5p package when one is used, and the preview used to test the learner experience.

H5P content types

H5P has many content types. The exact list available to authors depends on the H5P libraries installed in the LMS, but common examples include:

  • Larger learning activities – Course Presentation, Interactive Book, Branching Scenario, Quiz (Question Set), and Documentation Tool.
  • Video and image activities – Interactive Video, Image Hotspots, Image Sequencing, Image Slider, Virtual Tour (360), and Agamotto.
  • Practice questions and checks – Multiple Choice, True/False Question, Fill in the Blanks, Drag and Drop, Drag the Words, Mark the Words, Find the Hotspot, and Sort the Paragraphs.
  • Study aids and summaries – Accordion, Dialog Cards, Flashcards, Summary, Timeline, and Chart.
  • Feedback and written answers – Questionnaire, Essay, Audio Recorder, and Speak the Words.

Authors choose the content type in the H5P editor and then fill in the fields required by that activity. For example, an Interactive Video can combine video with questions, while a Branching Scenario can send the learner through different paths based on their choices.

How H5P is used in the LMS

H5P content can be used in several LMS workflows:

  • As learning content – an existing H5P record can be added as the main content in Content and Materials. Learners open it in the player like other content, and H5P results are tracked when the activity reports them.
  • In quizzes – an H5P question in Quizzes uses an existing H5P record. The learner completes the selected H5P activity as the quiz question.
  • In the built-in H5P editor – authors create or maintain H5P activities in the Edit H5P content section. The editor is used for H5P-specific content creation, preview, .h5p upload, and reuse.
  • In the Content tool – the External link action gives a URL that can be embedded in the Content tool or another authoring tool when that tool needs to include an existing H5P activity.
  • For reuse – the same H5P record can be reused where H5P is supported. H5P content that is already used by learning content or a quiz question cannot be deleted until those uses are removed.

H5P list

The H5P list shows existing H5P content that you can access. Use it to find H5P content before editing, previewing, or using it in training and quizzes.

The table shows columns such as Name and Updated. Open the H5P content from Name to edit or preview it.

The Add action creates a new H5P record when you have permission to add H5P content.

Add H5P

Add H5P creates a new H5P record. Create the record first, then maintain the interactive content in the edit view.

The Add H5P form contains:

  • Name – the H5P content name.
  • Permission labels
The fallback content to display on prerendering
controlling which administrators can access the H5P content.

After creation, the H5P content opens in the edit view.

Content tool and H5P authoring

General LMS content setup is documented in Add and Edit and Content and Materials. Those pages explain content records, uploaded learning files, links, additional materials, and source files. Content tool covers the integrated SCORM-based authoring tool for courses with chapters, subchapters, slides, videos, and activities. Workspaces cover AI-assisted training authoring with a local directory, synchronized files, and the training runtime.

H5P authoring is handled separately in the H5P section. Use Edit H5P content when the activity itself is an H5P interaction, and use Content and Materials when you want that H5P interaction to become the main learning content in a content record.

If the Content tool or another authoring tool needs to include an existing H5P activity, use the External link action on the H5P page and embed that URL in the tool.

Edit H5P content

The H5P edit view is used to maintain existing H5P content.

info

Use Edit to change the H5P name, permission labels, interactive content, uploaded .h5p file, preview, external link, copy, download, or delete the H5P content.

General and Edit tabs

The General tab contains the basic H5P record settings:

  • Name – the H5P content name.
  • Permission labels
The fallback content to display on prerendering
    controlling administrative access.

The Edit tab contains:

  • H5P editor – the interactive H5P editor used to create or modify the H5P content.

Upload H5P file

The Upload section on the General tab accepts .h5p files.

warning

Uploading an H5P file overwrites the existing H5P content.

Preview tab

The Preview tab opens the H5P content as learners would see it. Use it to check the content before embedding it into training or using it in a quiz.

Actions

Depending on your permissions, the H5P page can include these actions:

  • External link – shows a URL that can be embedded outside the H5P page, especially in the Content tool or another authoring tool that needs to include the H5P activity.
  • Copy – creates a new H5P record from the current content.
  • Download – downloads the H5P content as a .h5p package.
  • Delete – removes the H5P content when deletion is allowed.

Delete

The Delete action removes the H5P content when you have permission to delete it.

H5P content cannot be deleted while it is used by learning content or by a quiz question. Remove those uses first if the LMS reports that the H5P content is in use.

  • Content tool – create structured courses and publish them as SCORM or directly into the LMS.
  • Add and Edit content – create or edit general LMS content records.
  • Content and Materials – add learning content, links, supporting materials, source files, and H5P content.
  • Workspaces – create structured training with a local directory, AI tool, synchronized files, and the training runtime.
  • Add or Edit quizzes – use H5P content as a quiz question.
